Things to do in Uluru, from first light onward
The park rewards early risers. Most of its best experiences happen before the heat: a sunrise, a walk around the rock or into a gorge, a ranger talk, then the cool rooms of the Cultural Centre.

Start with the sunrise
This list of things to do in Uluru starts at dawn, and Parks Australia's own short-stay advice agrees: the most popular choices for a brief visit are the sunrise from Talinguru Nyakunytjaku and the car sunset viewing area at dusk.5 The sunrise area is about 30 minutes by car from Ayers Rock Resort, with platforms, shelters and kilometers of track.61
The park opens before the sun in every month, at 5.00 am in summer and as late as 6.30 am in June and July, so there is no need to wait outside the gates.7 If you do not have a car, the coach tour this site books spends 5 hours on the sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, a Kata Tjuta viewing point and a walk in Walpa Gorge, from $147.
Whatever else you plan, keep the mornings for being outside. Parks Australia advises walking in the cooler parts of the day and avoiding the hours from 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm; in summer it recommends no walking after 11.00 am.8 That rhythm, out early and indoors at midday, shapes every good itinerary here.

Walk around the rock or into a gorge
The base walk is the closest you will get to Uluru: about 10 km of track around the whole rock, which you can walk in full or in sections.10 Parks Australia gives the loop as 10.6 km and 3 hours 30 minutes, and recommends starting from the Mala carpark early while it is cool.211 Our page on the base walk goes through it section by section, with the heat closures.
At Kata Tjuta, 50 km by road from Uluru, the walks run between the 36 domes.12 Walpa Gorge is 2.6 km return and takes about an hour, while the Valley of the Winds loop is 7.4 km, graded 4 and takes about 4 hours.1314 Our Kata Tjuta page compares them in detail.
Remember the camera rules on foot. Anangu ask visitors not to photograph the north-east face of Uluru, and not to film or photograph the rock formations on the Valley of the Winds walk; plants, animals and people are fine.1516

Learn from the people who live here
Parks Australia suggests starting your visit at the Cultural Centre, where exhibits and presentations with Anangu and park rangers explain the culture and the natural environment, beside a visitor information desk, Aboriginal art galleries and community-owned shops; allow at least two hours.4 It is open every day from 7.00 am to 5.45 pm.20
The ranger-guided Mala walk costs nothing beyond the park pass. It starts at the Mala walk carpark at 8.00 am from October to April and 10.00 am from May to September, and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.3 Rangers explain the rock art, show traditional tools and tell the Tjukurpa of the formations along the way.21
For a deeper experience, Parks Australia lists cultural activities that teach bush tucker, rock art and Tjukurpa stories, including a dot painting workshop.22 Maruku Arts, a not-for-profit incorporated in 1984, runs Anangu-led workshops and experiences in the park.23

Bikes, wheels and a self-guided ear
You do not have to walk to circle the rock. Outback Cycling rents bicycles from a shop just outside the Cultural Centre, and Parks Australia lists a self-guided ride right around Uluru, close to the rock surface.2425 Parks Australia also lists driving and Segway tours among the ways to explore the base.26
A guided ride at sunrise fills 5 hours: a picnic and sunrise for 45 minutes, 2.5 hours riding around the base and a guided stop at Mutitjulu Waterhole; it is for ages 12 to 55 and starts from $182. A shorter ride-and-walk version takes 4 to 5 hours with a stop at Kantju Gorge, for up to 10 guests, from $154.
If you drive yourself, an audio guide in seven languages, valid 10 days from first activation, is listed from $14; download it before you enter the park. Without a car, remember that the park has no taxis or public transport; a hop-on hop-off pass valid for 1 day costs from $99.27
See it from the air, or go further
The scale of the landscape only makes sense from above. A 15-minute helicopter flight over Uluru is rated 4.85 from 639 reviews and starts from $162. A longer helicopter experience over Uluru and Kata Tjuta, 25 minutes in the air, starts from $221. Drones, by contrast, are prohibited in the park.28
For a full day away from the rock, Kings Canyon is the classic choice. A 12-hour tour from Ayers Rock Resort includes a cooked breakfast at Kings Creek Station and the Rim Walk or an easier option; lunch is at your own cost, and a separate Watarrka National Park pass is compulsory. It is rated 4.64 from 629 reviews, from $242.
Among Uluru attractions, the light installation near Yulara is the one that runs in the dark. Bruce Munro's artwork has 50,000 spheres of light, and a 2-hour dawn tour walks you through it before sunrise, from $95.29
Where to eat and rest in the middle of the day
Inside the park, food is simple to plan because there is only one place to buy it: Ininti, in the Cultural Centre, is the only spot in the park where you can buy food and drinks.30 Behind the building, a picnic area with tables, gas barbecues and shelter looks straight at Uluru, a good place to sit out the hottest part of the day with your own lunch.31
The Cultural Centre itself is the natural midday stop. Its building, made of locally made mud bricks, opened in 1995 to mark ten years since the park was handed back to its Traditional Owners.32 Inside, Parks Australia suggests the Tjukurpa Tunnel as your very first experience of the park; it is self-guided, and photography is not allowed in it.33
The two Aboriginal-owned galleries, Maruku Arts and Walkatjara Art, are there too, with profits going back to the community.34 At Walkatjara, the Mutitjulu community's art centre, artists receive 50% of the sale price of their paintings, so buying a work here supports the people whose land you are visiting.35
Nature, art and the rhythm of the seasons
The park is home to 21 mammal species, 73 reptiles, 178 birds and 4 desert frogs, and more than 400 kinds of plants.36 August and September are usually the best months for wildflowers, and after heavy rain waterfalls pour off the rock; the easiest places to see them are the waterhole on the Kuniya side and Kantju Gorge.3738
Rock art is part of the walks rather than a separate visit. Anangu and park staff conserve around 80 rock art sites, and you can see paintings in shelters along the Mala and Kuniya walks; look, but never touch.39 The rock art cave on the Kuniya side, Kulpi Mutitjulu, was closed after damage, and Parks Australia's page says it stays shut until at least mid-2026, so check its status before you go.40
The best season for walking is May to September, when daytime highs are usually 20 °C to 30 °C and there is very little rain.41 October to March is hot, regularly above 35 °C, but brings the storms that fill the waterholes.42 Plan outdoor things for early morning in any month.
