Uluru and Kata Tjuta: the gorge after sunrise
After the rock, the domes. Kata Tjuta's walks range from an hour in a sheltered gorge to a steep loop between the domes, and the morning is the best time for both.

Quick answer
The many heads west of the rock
Kata Tjuta is a cluster of 36 steep-sided domes 50 km by road from Uluru, and its name is a Pitjantjatjara word meaning many heads.1 The domes cover more than 20 square kilometres and rise up to 546 metres above the plain.6 Where Uluru is one smooth block of sandstone, Kata Tjuta is a conglomerate of pebbles and boulders, mostly granite and basalt, cemented by sand and mud.7
For Anangu it is a men's site and sacred under Tjukurpa.1 The stories and cultural knowledge of these formations are not shared with visitors, and everyone is welcome on the walking tracks on that understanding.8 That is why the signs and the park's advice here focus on how to walk rather than on what the domes mean.
The first non-Aboriginal person to see the domes was the explorer Ernest Giles in 1872, who named the highest one Mount Olga.9 Mount Olga stayed the official name until 1993, when dual names were given, and in 2002 the order was reversed so that Kata Tjuta comes first.10

Walpa Gorge: an hour between two walls
Walpa Gorge is the Kata Tjuta walk that fits most easily into a morning at Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The track is 2.6 km return and takes about an hour; it is graded 3, has drinking water but no toilets, and there is no wheelchair access.3 Inside, the rocky path rises gently to a seasonal stream and ends at a grove of spearwood, a desert refuge for plants and animals.13
Keep your eyes on the slopes. Walpa Gorge is one of the few places at Kata Tjuta where you might see kanyala, the common wallaroo.14 In the shade of the walls the sound of your own steps carries along the rock. Late winter and early spring are especially rewarding: the entrance of the gorge is decorated with pink daisies in late winter, and in August and September the wildflowers of the park are usually at their best.1315
This is the walk on the booked sunrise tour: after the dawn at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, the coach continues to Kata Tjuta, stops at a viewing point and then walks the group through Walpa Gorge before driving back to Yulara. Parks Australia's listing of that morning describes the gorge as a world of rare plant species and evergreen scrub.16

The Valley of the Winds: lookouts and the loop
The Valley of the Winds near Uluru is graded 4: steep, rocky and difficult in places.18 The full loop is 7.4 km and takes about 4 hours, with drinking water halfway.418 Parks Australia gives 3 to 4 hours for the circuit.18
You do not have to do it all. The first lookout, Karu, is 2.2 km return and about 1 hour; the second, Karingana, is 5.4 km return and about 2.5 hours.17 Parks Australia adds a detail worth knowing: completing the whole circuit is actually easier than walking to Karingana and back.17
A pair of rules shape the day. In hot weather the walk closes at Karu lookout from 11 am when the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36 °C or more.5 And this is a culturally sensitive men's area: please take no photographs or video of the rock formations anywhere on this walk, though close-ups of plants, animals and people are fine.21

Sunrise at the domes
If you want Kata Tjuta at first light, go to the dune viewing area. It gives a panoramic view of the domes with Uluru on the horizon, and the sun rises to the right or left of the rock depending on the season.1936 It can be crowded at sunrise but is usually quiet at sunset.19
Facilities are basic: wheelchair access, but no water and no toilets, and the drive from Yulara is 35 minutes.37 To avoid sensitive details of Kata Tjuta, Parks Australia asks photographers to keep at least 5 domes in the frame at all times.36
Parks Australia's own Kata Tjuta morning starts at the dune viewing area, moves on to the one-hour Walpa Gorge walk, and adds the Valley of the Winds if you have the energy.38 On a tour, a small-group Kata Tjuta sunrise with a picnic breakfast lasts 5 hours and takes at most 11 guests.
Walking with respect
Anangu have always shown respect when they come to Kata Tjuta. Parks Australia's words at Walpa Gorge ask the same of visitors: walk quietly, tread lightly and stay on the track.20
Stay on marked tracks everywhere in the park, and do not climb onto boulders or rock formations; it keeps you out of sacred areas you would not recognize.39 In Walpa Gorge, if you take pictures, keep both sides of the gorge in the frame so that no sacred place is revealed.40
These requests are not a burden on your day. They leave you with the gorge as it is, the sound of the wind and the light on the walls, and a few photographs that show the place the way its owners are comfortable with.
Tours that take you to the domes
The simplest way to add the domes to an Uluru morning is the coach tour this site books. It spends 5 hours on the sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, a Kata Tjuta viewing point and the Walpa Gorge walk, with tea or coffee at dawn and an accredited driver guide, from $147. On the 45 km drive between the two landmarks the guide gives an overview of the park's history.16 The park pass is extra, so buy it online the evening before.
If you prefer the afternoon, a small-group Kata Tjuta tour from Yulara lasts 3 hours and picks up only from accommodation at Ayers Rock Resort; cancellation is free until 3 days before. For the long walk, a guided Valley of the Winds circuit hike lasts 5.5 hours, with 1 hour in the van and 3 hours on the trail, and its listing says it does not suit people with mobility impairments or a low fitness level.
A culture-focused day is another route. One listing combines Uluru culture with the Kata Tjuta trails over 6 hours, including the Walpa Gorge walk of about 1 hour and the flat Kuniya walk of about 1 km at the rock; its price does not include the park pass. It starts from $109 and has a 5.0 rating from 9 reviews, so it is newer and less tested than the big coach morning.
Heat, water and timing
Kata Tjuta is a morning place for most of the year. Parks Australia recommends walking in the cooler parts of the day, avoiding 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm, and in summer not walking after 11.00 am.41 Carry and drink at least one litre of water per person per hour on any walk.42
The numbers explain why. At the Yulara weather station, average highs reach 38.4 °C in January and 36.4 °C in December, while the July average high is 20.9 °C.43 A gorge walk early on a winter morning is cool and easy; the same walk at noon in January is a risk.
Allow for the drive. Kata Tjuta is about 45 minutes from Ayers Rock Resort, and there is no public transport in the park, so you need a car, a tour or a hop-on hop-off pass.244 A day pass of that kind is listed on GetYourGuide, valid for 1 day, from $99.
